Behind the Cake

Takes the Cake started long before it became a business. It’s the product of years spent flipping through cookbooks, tinkering with recipes, and procrastibaking my way through college and grad school. What began as a creative escape turned into a calling, and in 2022 I finally took the leap into full-time baking.

Quality has always been at the heart of what I do. I use ingredients I’d want in my own kitchen—Nielsen-Massey vanilla, European butter, pasture-raised eggs, organic fruit, and local ingredients whenever I can. No seed oils, no shortcuts, no “mystery” foods. Just real ingredients that make every bite worth it.

My style leans toward artistic buttercream work: palette-knife painted florals, subtle texture, and designs that feel modern, intentional, and elegant. I want every cake to be a centerpiece for your special events - something guests linger over before they ever take a bite.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: create desserts that look beautiful, taste incredible, and make your celebration feel that much more special.

Meet the Baker

I’m Chassidy (pronounced like Charlie… but with sass). I’m a Southwest Virginia native—home of Dr. Pepper, rolling hills, and my lifelong love of good food. I’m also the world’s okay-est aunt and a wholehearted follower of Jesus. My faith is the lens I see everything through and the foundation of how I run my business and create edible art.

When I’m not slinging sugar across the kitchen (usually onto the floor - spatial awareness is not my gift), you’ll find me lifting weights so I can haul heavy wedding cakes, clocking my 10k steps, feeding my brain with podcasts, or testing every “fancy” water on the market. Current obsession: Poppi.

My constant sidekick is Sir Sheriff Dharius Dan Tucker Carlston IV—yes, that is his full name, but he answers to Tucker. We take our neighborhood walkies seriously.

After a long day of deliveries, I’m usually hunting for a local spot to grab something delicious - preferably with outdoor seating and a breeze.

And because everyone always asks: my favorite thing to bake will forever be cookies with my niece and nephew.
